A few years back I did an interview for an internship with Vogue and they asked me exactly what you'd expect to be asked by a representative of the most influential fashion publication in the world.

"Where do you draw your style inspiration from?"

I delivered one of my favorite answers ever, and it probably was the answer that lead to my being offered the internship:

"I'd say my family. I had such an amazing childhood thanks to them. My summers were spent in the mountains, my holidays at the Yale and University Clubs. I had such a rich experience with them, one that was filled with love. It helps that the women in my family are all so stylish. I'd say most of my inspiration comes from them."

It's an answer I believe in to this day. Real people are the ones we should be drawing inspiration from. Airbrushed models and starlets wearing the latest couture items may be glamorous and worthy of emulation, but it's how the clothes apply to your life that matters.

Where better to learn that then from the people around you? My great aunt is the go-to for high-low inspiration. My great grandmother the icon of couture. My mother is very casual-chic and my aunt is of the bohemian sensibility. All of them with a dash of northern prep.

So thank you all for giving me the inspiration to get up in the morning and approach my wardrobe not just for its function, but for the things that it can say about me and how I look at the world around me.
