New Puppy!
Hello again! It's been a while. How've you been doing? Me? Well, life for the last six months has had it's ups and downs, but in truth it's mostly been ups. Why?
We got A PUPPY!
When G and I first talked about getting a pup all our own, we were thinking a Corgi. We have a thing for Cowboy Bebop, and we were going to name him Ein just like the dog from the show.
A harder look into breeds, however, made Gus suggest a Shiba Inu, Japan's most popular breed and one of the best breeds for apartment living. The exercise demands for a Corgi are high, and Shibas are far less demanding when it comes to how much of a workout they require.
Once I'd met a Shiba, back in August, I was convinced. It had to be mine. I became obsessed, a woman on a mission, all that mattered was finding the right dog. We found a breeder near Gainesville, sent a deposit and hoped our baby would arrive soon.
By December, there was still no word on when a puppy would arrive, and G started scouring the internet for an alternative pup... and he found one. A family in West Miami had a litter, and we went to meet their last available boy and his parents that evening.
As soon as I held him in my arms I knew he was mine. A week later, we brought Kenji home with us... and our lives have never felt more complete. The amount of love that a puppy brings to your life is indescribable, the most basic way to describe it is that I now know why people call themselves "dog parents". Puppies really do look at you as mommy and daddy.
We started training him immediately upon bringing him home, enrolled him in puppy kindergarten and, as soon as we were able, started introducing him to other puppies and people. So far he's been very social, super happy and loaded with "Shibatude". One of the best parts of this breed is their weirdo personalities, and Kenji has done nothing but make us laugh for the past three months.
Taking him to all of our favorite Miami spots has been the biggest joy, it's amazing how much you can do around your city with a dog. He's the perfect size for an adventure buddy, too. Not too big, not too small. We have lots of dog owning friends and family, so it's been a blast introducing him to new friends and giving him tons of doggie play dates.
Miami has become such a dog-friendly city, I'll be writing a post about my favorite spots to bring your furry friend (or should I say fur baby?) very soon!
Until then. xo
Cute puppy!
