I was at Barnes & Noble the other day looking for a new fashion book and I was completely infuriated by my options. First off, how do half of these people get published without providing a new perspective? Second, why are we all lumped into categories?
It starts out in the teen fashion books. Are you girly? Edgy? Maybe you're sporty or glam. There's also bohemian, if you think of yourself as a wanna be hippie or a bobo-in-training. No matter what though, you have to fit in one of these categories.
Here! We'll even give you a personality quiz so you can shove yourself into a box.
Want to know what I left the bookstore with? A magazine. A special issue of People StyleWatch to be exact. Why? Because I saw the same celebrities showcased in all kinds of style! Olivia Palermo, for example, was showcased in chic, glam, classic, feminine, etc. No one should be limited by a category. Sure, we all have our own aesthetics and taste, but that doesn't mean that we can't transition from girly to boho in the blink of an eye.
Look at Valentino, they represent femininity with an edge. It's not one or the other, it's symbiosis. I try out a lot of things on my blog, and I couldn't tell you a category that I fit into. If someone asked, my answer would probably be: "Feminine and classic with an edgy twist."
Do me a favor, stay true to you. Don't let anyone put you in a box, and definitely don't put yourself in a box. Think outside of it, try everything and be a sartorial explorer. Style icons are made because they're a little dangerous, they take risks, and they aren't afraid to try something different.

Love,
Wendy
Thanks so much, Wendy! xoxo
DeleteOh my gosh, I'm in love with that dress! And I really love your message, too. I wish more people would stay true to themselves
ReplyDeleteThank you! I don't think anyone should try to box themselves in, we're all so different! Style should reflect that. xxx
Deletepretty! Lovely look
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI may say this wrong but I heard one time "Be yourself, every one else is already taken". I agree with this statement so much! I'm not trendy or overly stylish but I'm me and if you ask my friends, family and spouse, I'm pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that you are attracted to that statement makes you VERY cool in my book! Thanks so much for reading, Stephanie! xoxo
DeleteStephanie, I've heard that too, I believe Oscar Wilde supposedly said that. :)
ReplyDeleteAmanda, I love your hair and the print of the dress is fabulous!
Thanks so much! It was an Oscar Wilde quote. :)

great advice! I feel the same way; I like so many different things and they don’t all go together. People act like you have to look a certain way to feel a certain way, but it’s just not true. You can love punk rock and not have a punk rock look, for example. Love your photos, btw! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! Great example. I have a love for all types of music, but punk rock brings me right back to middle school! Some of the edgier looks you see on my blog are influenced by that.
DeleteStyle should be dictated by incorporating pieces you love into your wardrobe, not by what everyone says you should wear. xoxoxo
