Building on Basic Black
There's a reason why everyone loves the color black. Universally flattering, easy to mix and match and ever-stylish, black is the go-to color for almost everyone I know. I can't even tell you how many times I've heard, "I really should start wearing more than just black."
Black has become especially important since starting my capsule wardrobe. When you only have a few pieces to choose from, every single piece better be versatile. You can now imagine why such a staple holds such an important place in my closet.
One of the best ways to pull of a black ensemble is to add interest, be it different colors in the accessories and topper pieces or different types of fabric (I did a combination of both), black can look a little too goth if worn exclusively. That's why I added in a couple tan/oatmeal pieces, it helps soften the overall look.
Style Notes and Outfit Details
Tank from Forever 21 // For basic tees and tanks, I love to shop at Forever 21. They're super affordable and these ones have lasted me for years. Even if I have to swap them out, they're so inexpensive that it doesn't even matter. This is where I'd say that quality does not necessarily mean a higher price tag.
Vest from Anthropologie (similar) // You've seen this vest before, and it's become a real favorite of mine since I picked it up towards the end of the summer. It's so light, and it adds just the right amount of interest to an outfit without overpowering a look.
Pants from Anthropologie (old, also love these) // These were probably the one piece, besides my plaid, that I was the most excited to pull out from storage. These velvet pants are so extraordinarily comfortable, it's hard to imagine how I ever got through fall without them.
Shoes from Jeffrey Campbell // So besides my newly-acquired Miu Mius, these booties are my favorite shoes I own... but I may just say that about all of my shoes. ;)
Bag from Kate Spade (old, love this one too) // I bought this when I really needed a classic, neutral bag. Something I could carry around every day. A black satchel was a no-brainer, and getting it from Kate Spade was a must. Especially since I got it during one of their famous 75% off sales.
Sunglasses from Ray-Ban (similar) // So these are the same sunglasses that Becca Moody wears in the intro of Californication, which is appropriate because their color is so different. Maroon and purple isn't really a classic color combo, but on these already hip wayfarers it's just right.
Necklace from TAudrey // I've officially gravitated off of the statement necklace bandwagon and on to the delicate jewelry train. Quicker to style, easier to wear and it doesn't overpower the outfit. I'll still wear a statement piece here and there, but necklaces like this are my new staple.
